About Us

The Probus Club of Torquay was founded on the 16th of April 1970 by a group of local ex Rotarians as an opportunity for retired and semi-retired professional and business men to keep active through social interaction with like-minded fellows.

Probus clubs first started in the UK in 1965 when a group of Rotarians wished to continue in fellowship after largely retiring from work. The name Probus reflects the professional and business men who comprised members, with ‘probity’ being the hallmark of their working lives and with no denominational, sectarian, political, philosophical or other requirements.

There are now over 2,000 Probus clubs across the UK and beyond, each club remaining autonomous.

Our principal activity consists of meeting every Thursday morning from 10.00 for tea/coffee and biscuits and ‘putting the world to rights’, moving on to a speaker from 10.45 to around 12.00, followed by many members socialising in the bar till around 12.30. Occasionally some members continue with a quick light lunch. All in a very informal atmosphere.

We have a membership of 40 or so meeting 50 times a year (attendance at all meetings is not compulsory!) with two weeks off over the Christmas period after our annual Christmas lunch. This all takes place at the Livermead House Hotel on Torquay seafront where we are well looked after by their attentive staff and with plenty of free parking. Our current membership covers a variety of  many walks of life: engineering, finance, research, planning, environment, science, veterinary, health, farming, surveying and many more.

At each meeting we have a quality guest speaker chosen from a list of well-known experienced local speakers covering a wide variety of subjects, which are always interesting, entertaining and informative.

Dress code is casual with jacket (with or without a tie), and anyone considering joining us can be assured of a warm welcome. If you are interested you can attend a couple of meetings free of charge to get to know us and see what we are all about before deciding whether to join.

To arrange to attend a meeting simply contact our Secretary, Martin Tucker by phone on 07825 882457 or email  martin_tucker@hotmail.co.uk.

PROBUS exists to provide a social forum, fellowship and friendship for like-minded people. Join us.
